MICRO-FINANCING INSTITUTIONS JOIN SERBSIYO MUNA PROJECT OF PGMA

The Serbisyo Muna! project of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo continues to expand its delivery of basic needs and services for the people, by inviting micro-financing institutions to join its regular Serbisyo Muna caravans.

The Serbisyo Muna! is an umbrella project which converges the socio-civic and community development efforts of the various arms of government, the local government units, the NGOs as well as the private and religious sectors. The Caravans, meanwhile, are whole-day events where the participating agencies of the Serbisyo Muna bring their much needed services directly to the people.

The micro-financing organization, Kooperatiba ng Sambayanan ng Banal na Krus or KSBank, joined the most recent Serbisyo Muna cavaran held in the Municipality of Pateros last December 22. No less than President Arroyo was welcomed by Pateros Mayor Rosendo Capco during the occasion, which was highlighted by a series of activities such as a free medical and dental mission, livelihood training seminars, deployment of NFA rolling stores, a community beautification drive and many more.

PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Efraim C. Genuino affirms the significance of micro-financing institutions by saying “micro-financing not only affords a greater number of people a chance to improve their economic status but also, in the long run, make them important contributors to trade in their community.”

Meanwhile, Josephine Vidal, micro-finance management information supervisor for KSBank, said their involvement in outreach activities like Serbisyo Muna enables them to inform the public about various financial services they provide.

She said that micro-financing institutions like KSBank strongly encourage those who need capital to take advantage of the loan options they offer instead of the prevalent “five-six” system that have steep terms. In the same manner, they offer a more convenient and personalized approach to the banking needs of their borrowers compared to conventional banks.

“Turning over funds to first-time borrowers is fast and only takes about two weeks. We lend money on a cash-flow basis, which means we do not base it on one’s assets or property,” she explained.

Vidal also stressed that apart from lending, KSBank also conducts lectures on the importance of saving money in order for entrepreneurs to develop their own capital. During the Serbisyo Muna caravan they distributed info materials on its “Puhunan Mo, C.A.R.E. (Cooperative Assistance to Reinforce Entrepreneurs) Ko” program and conducted a livelihood demo on processed meat making, rug making and paper folding.

The next Serbisyo Muna caravan will be held in the City of Navotas on January 13, 2006. As in previous caravans, it is organized by the Serbisyo Muna Taskforce composed of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) as its chief coordinator, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), Department of Agriculture (DOA), Department of Health (DOH), National Food Authority (NFA), Philippine International Trading Corporation (PITC), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Local Government Units, and numerous other participating government offices.
