Serbisyo Muna reaches out to Bgy. Batasan Hills, QC

Elizabeth Toca, a 46-year-old resident from Bgy. Batasan Hills, Quezon City, does not hesitate when asked to talk about how the government has helped make life easier for her and her family.

Last year, Toca’s family was one of the beneficiaries of the highly-successful Patubig Project of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. This time, she and her two daughters were among 5,000 residents, who received free medical, dental and optical services during the Serbisyo Muna! Caravan held in her barangay last April 7.

The Serbisyo Muna Caravan is a whole-day event which brings together the socio-civic services of the key line agencies, the local government and participants from various sectors all under one roof. It is one of the major components of the Serbisyo Muna Project of the President.

No less than President graced the Bgy. Batasan caravan held at the Batasan Hills National High School. With her were PAGCOR Chairman Efraim Genuino, overall project coordinator of Serbisyo Muna; City Mayor Sonny Belmonte; Las Pinas City Mayor Imelda Aguilar; PNP-NCRPO Director General Vidal Querol and Ms. Berna Romula-Puyat, head of the Office for Political and Coalition Affairs.

“Laking kaginhawaan po talaga ang dulot nitong mga programang ito sa aming pamilya, sa mga tulad naming hirap sa buhay (This project has brought great relief from the hardships of life),” shared Toca during the caravan.

“Di hamak na mas mahirap pa ang buhay namin kapag wala man lang kaming mapagkunan ng malinis na tubig. Pero dahil may mga ganitong programa ang Presidente, tulad ng patubig at libreng serbisyong medical at pati optikal, napakalaking tulong po talaga ito sa amin (Our lives would have been so much worse, especially if we did not have clean water. But through the projects of the President like potable water and free medical and even optical services, these have been a great help to us),” she added.

With a brood of 14 children and her husband earning only a minimum of P150 a day for driving a tricycle, Toca said having received free medicine for her daughters and a pair of eyeglasses for herself were pure blessings.

“Hindi po namin kayang tustusan ang pagpapa-check-up at pagbili ng mga gamot, pati ang pagbili ng eyeglasses sa isang iglap lang (We cannot readily afford the cost of check-ups, medicine and eyeglasses),” Toca said.

“Kaya lubos po kaming nagpapasalamat kay Presidente Arroyo sa mga biyayang ito (That is why we are very thankful to President Arroyo for these blessings),” she added.

Aside from visiting the free medical and dental mission area, the President led the turnover of licenses to operate Botika ng Barangay outlets to 21 barangays in Quezon City while 14 others received certificates to operate Tindahan Natin outlets. Free eyeglasses were also given to 200 selected beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, one mobile patrol unit was turned-over to the city PNP.

Other activities during the caravan were: distribution of 1,000 Philhealth cards to identified beneficiaries; SSS Online and NBI-on-wheels services; livelihood programs and demonstrations of skills and free services by TESDA and TLRC; seminars on road ethics by the DOTC and on energy safety practices and efficiency measures by the DOE; presentation of Micro-Finance Institutions (MFIs), lectures on micro-lending; DA’s distribution of assorted vegetable seeds; distribution of information materials by the PIA, DOE and Meralco; beautification and clearing program by the DPWH, MWSS and Meralco; and NFA’s deployment of rolling stores.

PAGCOR Chairman Genuino expressed confidence in the continued success of the President’s program.
“Through the leadership of President Arroyo, the Serbisyo Muna! will go on bringing the much-needed basic services to thousands more,” he assured.
